The Hartford Public Library (HPL) was one of the noisiest
places in town last Friday, September 18, as hundreds of people
danced the night away at the library's BIG NOISE celebration.
The celebration, which raised several thousand dollars, is one
of a series of events scheduled in the upcoming months to raise
funds for the library's expansion and renovation.
Honorary Event Chair Eunice S. Groark, the Capital Campaign Advisory
Council of the HPL and many other library supporters attended
the gala event.
Hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and a variety of desserts were supplied
by City Fare, located on 86 Franklin Avenue in Hartford's South
End.
An assorted selection of beverages were donated by Spiritus Wines
located on 367 Main Street. Centerpieces and fresh flowers were
provided by Judy Malootian for the library's Hartford Room and
Jim Brunelle for the lobby and the Reading Room.
The sounds of Sambra Brazil and Strictly Swing provided the musical
background for the event. The party also included a "Mini-Slam,"
hosted by Monique Jarvis, featuring poetry, comedy and music
with Broderick B. May, Victor E. Jarvis, Henry Roseboro, Luis
aka "El Extreme", Edmund Peart, Pat McDermott Trevant
and Joe Young.
"It was a wonderful experience working with the staff of
the Hartford Public Library on this event. Filling the library
with vitality, energy and charisma was such a pleasure for me.
I formerly lived at the Goodwin and presently am residing at
the Bushnell Towers...just a minutes walk to the library. This
institution means so much to Hartford. The completion of the
expansion plans will be really great because so many fine people
care about our Hartford Public Library," said event coordinator
John Alves.
