On Wednesday, August 5, The Greater Hartford Association of
Retarded Citizens, Inc. (HARC) visited Colt Park for the summer
reading program "Celebrating Me." The program is designed
to help educate all children who attend Hartford summer programs
about their own uniqueness and about people with disabilities
and differences.
Founded in 1951, HARC's mission is to bridge the gap between
people's abilities and their pursuit of happiness at home, at
work, in school or during leisure moments.
The focus of last week's storytelling program was to provide
Hartford youngsters an opportunity to share in the richness that
accompanies life's challenges, as well as in the barriers that
need to be overcome.
HARC, in conjunction with the City of Hartford, has providedrecreational
experiences for children over the past eight years. Last year,
1,000 children learned about persons with disabilities in HARC's
program, "Different is Just Different."
