Next Tuesday is Election Day.
This newspaper strongly endorses Democrat John Larson as the
next U.S. Congressman from Connecticut's first district. Larson
is an experienced and dedicated public official who has served
in the state assembly as Speaker of the House where he demonstrated
considerable talent and ability as a legislator. This experience,
which his opponent lacks, will enable Mr. Larson to effectively
represent the interests of his Hartford constituents. He will
also support the Democratic agenda in the areas of education,
social security reform, employment, the environment, and health
care reform.
We also need to send John Larson to Washington to help defend
President Clinton from the unfair, partisan attack being led
by the Republican leadership in congress. We should vote as many
Republicans as possible out of office and replace them with Democrats.
Republicans must be defeated to regain control of congress from
the extreme element of the party led by Newt Gingrich who is
trying to overturn the election of Bill Clinton.
Despite Kevin O'Connor's apparent moderate views, we think that,
if he is elected, he will have to follow the leadership of the
Republican party, which is controlled by far-right interests,
in order to get desirable committee appointments.
We urge all of our readers to get out and vote for John Larson
on Tuesday. You can also help by calling your friends and relatives
in other parts of the country and convincing them to vote for
Democratic candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives and
Senate. There are lots of close races all over the country where
Democrats need as much help as possible.
We also encourage our readers to return Chris Dodd to the senate.
He has served Connecticut well for eighteen years and deserves
to continue.
In addition, vote for Barbara Kennelly to be our next Governor.
Hartford residents will be much better off if she is elected
because of her more progressive views on such issues as welfare
reform, health care, education, and child and family services.
And finally, vote yes on the bonding propositions 3, 4, &
5. Hartford needs the money to rebuild and renovate our schools.
