Town InformationThe town of Pomfret is located in northeast Connecticut, it covers about 40 square miles and is home to approximately 3,300 residents. Pomfret is about a one hour drive from Hartford the capital of Connecticut, and about a one hour drive to Providence Rhode Island. The first settler was probably Captain John Sabin, who built a house in 1696 which served as an outpost against the Indians. The settlement was known by the Indian name Massamugget until 1713 when the town was Incorporated. Pomfret is probably best know historically for the Wolf Den where General Israel Putnam killed the last wolf in Connecticut which now the State of Connecticut maintains as a State Park. The Wolf Den has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C. Today, Pomfret has experienced a change from being strictly rural agricultural to being rural residental with approximately 14 farms left of which 5 are dairy farms. The others range from orchard apple and grape to pumpkins. Also in Pomfret are some thriving industrial complexes which ship food, fiberoptics, wire cable and forestland products world wide.Preferred Town USA CustomersInclude a hypertext link from your free Town USA Business Listing to your web site to increase the exposure of your web site to your local community.
