Town Information

The town of Canterbury with a population of 4,560 is located in eastern Connecticut on the Quinebaug River and covers 40.0 sq. miles. One of the first settlements north of Norwich and west of the river was established in present-day Canterbury by James Fitch in about 1690. Fitch was for years considered the "lord proprietor", but eventually control of the settlement passed to new residents arriving from Massachusetts. In 1703 the area on the west bank of the river was set off from Plainfield on the east bank and incorporated. Because it was not along the most central transpiration routes, the town remained primarily agricultural through the industrial revolution in the state. Today the principal industries remain primarily agricultural and dairy.

I would personally like to congradulate Jennifer Ross and Erika Luppert for making the U-14 softball team. This team mainly consists of 13 year-old from the Conventry area. The head coach is Larry Bates. The team is called the Connecticut Bombers and will play some of the best teams in the area. The seasoc starts in the summer and will play around 65 games during this time. Jennifer who will be playing catcher says, "It's pretty cool that Erika and I are the only ones from Canterbury area who made the team." Erika is one of the main pitchers said to us, "I know I'm in for a lot this summer, but I'm looking foward to this. We are playing all over the state of Connecticut, in places like Hamden and Newington. I know a lot of people from around the state and they will come to watch. Coach Bates also said he gonna try to schedule tournaments in places like Cape Cod, and some places in New Hampsire. I'm looking foward to the season."
