Town InformationThe town of Norwich in southeast Connecticut where several streams converge to form the navigable head of the Thames River, covers 27.1 square miles. The town was incorporated in 1662; the City of Norwich, originally called Chelsea, was chartered in 1784; the two were consolidated in 1951. Norwich's 35,000 residents believe their City is indeed a rose, offering much to resident and visitor alike. The City of Norwich recently became home to the Norwich Navigators, AA team for the New York Yankees with the commencement of the inaugural season on April 17, 1995 at Senator Thomas J. Dodd Stadium built recently here in Norwich. On November 21, 1995 the City celebrated the grand opening of its brand new Norwich Municipal Ice Arena.
