Town InformationThe town of Colchester in southeast Connecticut, covers 48.7 square miles and is home to some 10,680 residents. Colchester was first settled in 1695. The town was incorporated in 1698 but was not given its present name until a year later. The town became the hub of local turnpikes soon after the first Hartford-New London turnpike opened in 1800. These roads encouraged industry, and soon the semi rural commercial center developed that would continue manufacture paper and textile goods well into the present century.
