Town InformationThe town of Oxford, population 9,070 covering 33.0 sq. miles is located in southwest Connecticut on lands originally purchased from Paugessett and Pootatuck Indians by settlers in Derby around 1673. The first settlement was probably made in 1678, but little is known about it and other dates have been suggested. An ecclesiastical society was formed in 1741. The town was incorporated from Derby and Southbury in 1798. In the past century Oxford was a bustling center of regional industry and commerce. Three woolen mills dominated the town's daily activity, but tanneries also provided material for shoe shops and had factories. Small farms also proliferated, although the rough terrain always made that business a difficult one. The mills closed when the construction of the railroads forced their relocation, and the farms declined when the introduction of highways made access to employment in other towns convenient. Today this a rural and quiet residential community, populated chiefly by workers employed in the surrounding towns.Preferred Town USA CustomersInclude a hypertext link from your free Town USA Business Listing to your web site to increase the exposure of your web site to your local community.
