Town InformationThe town of Haddam is located in south central Connecticut, is home to 6,980 covering 46.7 sq. miles and is the only town in the state that is bisected by the Connecticut River. The town was incorporated in 1668 and the town's unique position on the river has determined most of its development. The water power advantages were utilized as early as 1668, when the first gristmill was built, and by the 19th century textile, tannery, and distillery businesses lined the river, traversed at that time by four ferries. The river was also notable for the size of yearly shad run. So plentiful was the fish in its salted, smoked, pickled and fresh forms that some disgruntled farmhands specified in their contracts that they not be served shad more than five times a week. The town also contains a number of quarries, for the perpendicular strata of granite here made it especially valuable as paving stone. Loaded on boats and barges at Rock Landing for shipment down the river, these stones provided pavement for significant portions of New Orleans and Savannah. Today Haddam, a well kept residential community, is also site of the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Plant.
