Town InformationThe town of Washington, with a population of 4,160 and covering 38.7 sq. miles is located in the western Connecticut is named after George Washington and is the second town in the United States to be named for him. The town was incorporated in 1779 from Litchfield, Woodbury, Kent and New Milford. The town straddles the Shepaug River Valley, and its steep hills never permitted any but limited agriculture. In the early 1800s the hills were worked primarily for marble, but also for iron ore and even white clay. The Shepaug Railroad, in service from 1872 until 1949, brought the town summer visitors from New York and transported the goods of light industries producing items such as sleighs, buttons, and knives.Preferred Town USA CustomersInclude a hypertext link from your free Town USA Business Listing to your web site to increase the exposure of your web site to your local community.
