Town InformationThe Town of Litchfield, population 8,420 covering 57.3 sq. miles is located in the west central Connecticut and one of the earliest and most prominent in the northwest corner of the state. In 1715, John Marsh traveled from Hartford and explored the area then called the "Western Lands", which included what is now Litchfield and some of the neighboring towns. A title to the area was secured from the Pootatuck Indians in 1716. Three years later, in 1719, the town was incorporated by the Connecticut General Assembly, a full year before the first settlers arrived. Today Litchfield is primarily residential and agricultural and a center for dairy farming. Since 1914, the White Memorial Foundation here has maintained 4000 acres as a game and forest preserve open to the public.
