Town InformationBurlington is located slightly northwest of the center of the state in Hartford County and was first settled in 1740 by 19 families of the Seventh Day Baptist Church who came here from Westerly RI, to escape religious persecution in their home state. Then considered a northern district of Bristol, the area had been left unsettled until then because of the hills. By 1774, however, there were enough permanent inhabitants to organize a Congressional Society, which they called West Britain. The town was incorporated under its present name when Bristol was divided in 1806. The basis of early economy here was timber, but in the middle of the last century promising copper deposits were discovered. Population: 7,200. Sq. miles: 30.6.State of Connecticut: Town
