Town InformationThe town of Berlin covers 27 sq. miles and is located in central Connecticut. Incorporated principally from Farmington but from portions of Wethersfield and Middletown as well. Berlin is home to 17,500. The early settlers spilled over into the north to colonize what was to become New Britain. In 1660, Sgt. Richard Beckley, who came from New Haven via the Quinnipiac trail, built a house among the Mattabassett Indians in what is now East B erlin. By 1686 settlers from Farmington had begun to move into the area known as the "Great Swamp", and 1705 the Great Swamp Society was separated from that of Farmington. Unhappy with the name, the settlers changed it to Kensington and called its eastern section Worthington, a name now seldom used.
