Town InformationThe town of Redding, population 7,990 covering 32.2 sq. miles is located in southwestern Connecticut on lands originally purchased by the founders of Fairfield in 1636. The first settlers were Captain Cyprian Nichols and John Read in 1714. Their isolated outpost here was then called Lonetown. In 1729 the general Assembly granted Read's petition for parish privileges. In 1767 the town was incorporated from Fairfield. The principal business in Redding is the Gilbert and Bennet Wire Company. It originated when Benjamin Gilbert, a tanner, had the first wire cloth woven on a neighbor's carpet loom in 1837. Still in town, the company continues to concentrate on woven wire products.
