Town Information

The town of Newtown, population 20,810 covering 60.4 sq. miles is located in Fairfield County, South Western Connecticut was first called by the Indian name Potatuck. According to a deed issued in 1705, the lands were originally purchased from the Indians by three men from Stratford. In 1708 the General Court permitted establishment of a town on this tract west of the Housatonic River, and settlement began almost immediately. By 1710 there were 22 proprietors. The town was incorporated in 1711. Since the Stevenson Dam was completed in 1919, which created Lake Zoar, the town has attracted a large summer colony. Corporate headquarters and utility offices have replaced the local industries, but the town retains its rural character and the picturesque qualities of its location atop a scenic ridge.
