Town InformationThe town of Brookfield, population 14,480 covering 19.8 sq. miles is located in southwestern Connecticut near the New York border. It was originally a parish called the society of Newbury. The town was incorporated on land from Danbury, New Milford, and Newtown in 1788, although minor boundary disputes persisted until a final agreement was reached with Danbury in 1797. The town prospered in the 1800s because of its stage coach stops, several taverns and two railroad stations. It thus became an early tourist attraction with many fine hotels in a beautiful setting. The town maintains a significant historic district and conducts tours of restored houses, schools, churches, and gardens dating from colonial times.
